ALEX PROBA (STUDIO PROBA)

"MINE YOURS OURS HERS" / "A POSTER A DAY"
23.09 – 11.12.2017

Aba Art Lab brings to Spain for the first time, works by the multi disciplinary artist Alex Proba (Lüdenscheid, Germany). This young and experienced german artist who lives in New York, founded Studio Proba in 2013, a space dedicated to design in the fields of product, environmental, furniture and art. In her first presentation within a private space in Spain, Alex Proba brings her most intimate artistic oeuvre. Under the title "MINE YOURS OURS HERS / A POSTER A DAY", the viewer will be able to witness her creative process during the last four years, as the artist has produced one poster per day. This project began as a personal ritual. One summer night in 2013, in her Brooklyn apartment, she found herself locked in a creative blockage. In the hope of finding a way to shake it off, she began to work with images, forms and tones. With no specific destination in mind, the design grew, and in her creative mind, everything fell into place. The process will be rewarding, liberating and addictive.

TAMARA VAN SAN

21-22-23.09.2017

'Acting is telling the world who you are, regardless of your fears,' writes Tamara Van San. 'Sculpting is thinking through action.' Generally, Van San tries to create sculptures that speak to us without being figurative or geometric. Her new tower-shaped sculptures are related to Chinese Scholar Stones, to which she was introduced by the painter Zang Xiao Xia during a stay in China in 2010. The beauty of scholar stones resides in the fact that they are not man-made, but shaped by erosion. They are shapes that seem to be moving, that change under the influence of light. This in mind, Van San tries to create sculptures that start from a few parameters but might result in an endless series of projections by the onlooker. One way to do this, is to apply a multicolored glazing, which reinforces the shapes and the play of light.

NAUZET MAYOR
"MISERIA CONTEMPORÁNEA"
23.09 – 25.11.2017

"Miseria Contemporánea" (Contemporary Misery) is a project that takes references from reality to turn them into art by talking about the artistic fact and its connections with the personal life of the creator. The figure of the artist and his professional environment (art market, relations with institutions, galleries, curators and other artists) and social environment (marginality, ignorance, incomprehension, romantic vision of the creative work) are basic in this project. Nauzet Mayor is interested in generating reactions from different artistic topics understood as keys in an artist's career.

MARINA ABRAMOVIC
"THE FREEING SERIES"
Espai de la pl. de la Drassana, 15

"The Freeing Series" presents three seminal works by Marina Abramovic, produced in 1975, charged with personal and political significance for the artist and for her future career. The works were conceived and continue to represent in today's times of uncertainty, a scream for liberty and a desire to trespass the physical limitations represented by countries, transforming the body and mind into a territory free from restrictions.

"PICTURES: EL RITO (EL DOCUMENTAL)"
C. de Catalunya, 4

In "Pictures: El Rito (The Ritual)", the artist faces up to the challenge of examining the imagery armed with the most essential tool: a piece of charcoal, which draws us back towards the remote origins of representation, during the dawn of humanity. The shots reveal the marks left by the titanic struggle in which the artist strives to find the perfect balance between information and suggestion; an infinitely slippery slope …

VALERIE KRAUSE
14.09 – 17.11.2017

"Interface" is the second exhibition by Valerie Krause (Herdecke, Germany, 1976) and the first occasion in which she presents her work in Mallorca, as a solo project. The artist who resides in Düsseldorf presents a series of unseen sculptural works, including a large scale sculpture conceived specifically for the gallery's exhibition space, which coinciding with the exhibition, celebrates it's first year in it's new location in the Polígono Son Castelló industrial centre. Krause shows a refreshing sensitivity towards the crude nature of the materials used and the volumes achieved. Her sculptures bring out beauty with minor movements to the form, transforming conversations between the sculptures hanging in the exhibition hall. The artist draws the viewer into a different landscape with each work, where we discover different qualities in the materials she chooses to combine. Iron, concrete, earth, plaster, ceramics … A wide panoply which Krause reveals to us in order to reach the purity of form and understand her contribution to contemporary sculpture through minimalism.

YARA EL-SHERBINI

"LCB GUEST ARTIST PROGRAMME"

El-Sherbini presents an installation which references history, architecture and cultural fault lines. The project prototype, which will be shown to audiences for the first time at the gallery, explores the subversive power of language through word play, and the hackable nature of meaning through the super-imposition of anachronistic belief systems. Produced by La Caja Blanca in collaboration with Yara El-Sherbini, with special thanks to Carmen Gestoso for technical coordination and logistics.

SAMIRA ESKANDARFAR
"LCB GUEST ARTIST PROGRAMME"

Eskandafar presents Treadmill, the artist's first full length artist-film, produced in her home town Tehran (Irán). Funded entirely thanks to the acquisition of "Root Canal" at La Caja Blanca in 2015, the film will be presented to audiences for the first time at the venue. Eskandarfar's iconic artist films are included in reputable private and public collections such as The Tate Modern (UK). Produced by Samira Eskandarfar, with infinite gratitude to the collector who supported her work with Root Canal.

PEDRO CALAPEZ
"EL LÍMITE UBICUO"
23.09 – 25.10.2017

The variety of works presented in this exhibition, can be categorized in two broad groups: paintings of objects and paintings of fragments, which reveal a natural complementarity (no naturalized) between the pieces alone and as a collection. As is often the case with the artist, the exhibition layout reveals a gravitational force towards installation art, which invites audiences to ponder on the essence of each piece. It could be said that Pedro Calapez's works inhabit fringe areas on the frontier between media, which generates a circumstantial instability, which the artist takes on board and triggers through meticulous creative processes.

PARTITURAS PARA INSTRUMENTOS DE PERCUSIÓN
23.09 – 24.11.2017
Actuació de El Día eléctrico (7 pm) i Bearoid (8 pm),
de la Fira B (Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics)

Pelaires presents the recent work of Carlos Amorales (Ciudad de México, 1970), which can be seen for the first time in Spain, after being chosen to represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale (2017). The Partituras abiertas para címbalos [Open scores for cymbals] can be viewed on the ground floor of the gallery, a series of ten monotypes from 2016 that have never been exhibited before. There will be an exhibition on the first floor based on monotypes and paintings, güiros (a Mexican musical instrument) on tables, and mural art from the Anti Tropicalia series. The selection is completed by the screening of the video Fantasía de Orellana (2013), made in collaboration with Julián Lede, one of Amorales' most iconic pieces. The artist researches the textual, visual and musical languages as media or obstacles for communication through video, cinema, drawings, installations, performances, and sound.

MELVIN MARTÍNEZ
23.09 – 31.10.2017

Melvin Martínez (San Juan, 1976) is one of the most promising abstract painters of Puerto Rico. We will show a dialogue between the paintings, which reveal a compelling combination of original materials, a passionate lyricism and carefully composed harmonies which he refers to as his posters and "collages". Social criticism and historic signage in San Juan are protagonists here. His works are presented as dramatic compositions produced with glitter and shiny coating on paint and resins. The compositions propose a dialogue with many of the protagonists of the New York School; they are full of lights, rhythms and depths, where colours and textures complement each other, creating unique visual experiences. Martinez's new artistic discourse can be defined as intelligent and hypnotizing fusion of kitsch and post Pop.
